Friday Homeschool Photo Journal

I wanted to do a homeschool photo journal post, but looking through my pictures, I hardly took any homeschool-related ones in the last week or so. I did take a lot of pictures on the days we did the Great Backyard Birdcount however, so that's why this post is full of bird photos. We did three days of the count ~ info is here, if you want to try it out next year ~ and watched for about 15-20 minutes each day. We pretty much saw the same ten birds again and again. But it was still enjoyable.

I'm not sure if I have ever formally introduced our dogs here? We have a black lab named Yoshi...

And a Welsh Pembroke Corgi named Audrey...

This African violet ~ every year about this time I think of tossing it because it looks so disheveled and unlovely. Then it surprises me with a tiny purple flower.

We tapped our trees last weekend and have been getting a ton of sap! I am hoping to finish off a batch this morning to make our first syrup of the year.

Yesterday three of the kids took the National Mythology Exam. They think they did pretty well. I am looking forward to having a bit of time freed up in our schedule now that it is done.

A few plans for the days ahead

We have a few too many plans for the days ahead. It's one of those horse show/gymnastics meet/lots of errands/family visiting type weekends. And a full day of prep for those things today. It's all good though. I love watching my kids get out there and do their thing.

Homeschool notes

I really need to plan something else for Christopher's science; I just need to set aside the time to do it! He is on his last week of Book Shark science. I was thinking I'd just have him jump right into his high school biology, but I think I'm talking myself out of that. I may just get a science kit or two to tide him over till next year. Rose and I are about to begin a row of Owl Moon, which seems quite appropriate for this time of year. Grace, Christopher, James and I have been reading The Hound of the Baskervilles together, and what a fun book it is to read aloud! James was mad because today we had to stop on a cliffhanger:). We just wrapped up a few weeks of studying the art of Norman Rockwell, but I haven't decided who we'll study next. And by study I mean our regular picture study, we're still keeping it simple.

In the kitchen

I made a coconut chickpea curry in the slow cooker this week (and last week). This recipe is so good! And easy! Rose helped me make some neat little cherry pies I found on Pinterest for Washington's birthday. It was a busy day, so we needed something simple. They were quite good. I had the idea a couple of months ago to start saving my Pinterest ideas to boards named by month. So for my February board I save candy making ideas, Valentine crafts, and things like the little cherry pies for Washington's birthday. This has really inspired me to actually do the things I pin.

Watching & reading

We have a little stack of documentaries from Netflix we need to watch, but I can't seem to find time to do it. Without the kids we started watching Homeland. I am currently reading The Bear, and while disturbing to be sure, it is very, very good. Rose and I just started reading Stormy, Misty's Foal, only realizing partway through that we probably should have started with Misty. Oh, well.

Posts I'm working on

Our row of Harold and the Purple Crayon, March plans, and a mid-year eighth grade update.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful weekend!
