Planting Amaryllis

It's a yearly tradition, tweaked a bit this year.

I usually give each of my children an amaryllis kit for Christmas, just like my mom used to. We plant the bulbs some time over Christmas break and they bloom in time for Valentine's Day. The past couple years we have not had as much luck with our bulbs, though. So this year, I thought we would try planting them earlier in the season to see if that made a difference.

So far, so good.

I am not sure if they will bloom in time for Christmas, but they will look pretty whenever they decide to come up!  The flowers usually last only a week or so, but they are such a wonderful sight in the middle of winter! I highly recommend trying this, and the bulb kits are often on sale for less than $10 around the holidays.

This space will be quiet for the rest of the week as we prepare for Thanksgiving...and hopefully limit the stomach bug that one of the kids came down with today-ugh!

Have a wonderful holiday!

  1. I used to grow narcissus every winter, but fell out of the habit. I like the idea of buying the amaryllis kits for the kids, and I bet they would enjoy it too!

Hope the stomach bug passes very quickly - and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
